چکیده

This paper investigates the use of commercial modems mounted in a short-baseline (SBL) configuration on an autonomous surface craft (ASC) for tracking other marine vehicles. We have developed a method for tracking an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from an ASC using one-way range measurements provided by standard Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) modems. The method does not require transmission of detailed navigation information, but rather uses short ranging packets, which can be transmitted at a much higher rate than standard data packets. We present tracking results for the system in a shallow water environment using two autonomous vehicles. The results indicate that the system is capable of tracking an AUV given initial baseline information and modest knowledge of the vehicle’s mobility.

Acoustic Tracking of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles by a Set-membership Approach

An algorithm is presented for tracking of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) from acoustic time-of-flight measurements received by a field of surface floating buoys. The algorithm assumes that measurements and AUV dynamics uncertainties are unknown but bounded, with known bounds, and produces as output the set of admissible AUV positions. The algorithm has been validated by simulation in whi...

Adaptive Robust Control for Trajectory Tracking of Autonomous underwater Vehicles on Horizontal Plane

This manuscript addresses trajectory tracking problem of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) on the horizontal plane. Adaptive sliding mode control is employed in order to achieve a robust behavior against some uncertainty and ocean current disturbances, assuming that disturbance and its derivative are bounded by unknown boundary levels. The proposed approach is based on a dual layer adaptive...

Range-only Benthic Rover Localization off the Central California Coast

. Nowadays, the use of autonomous vehicles for ocean research has increased, since these vehicles have a better cost/performance ratio than crewed vessels or oceanographic ships. For example, autonomous surface vehicles can be used to localize underwater targets. This paper describes a mission to find a crawling robot Benthic Rover on the abyssal plain in the north eastern Pacific, using single...

Close-Range Tracking of Underwater Vehicles Using Light Beacons

This paper presents a new tracking system for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) navigating in a close formation, based on computer vision and the use of active light markers. While acoustic localization can be very effective from medium to long distances, it is not so advantageous in short distances when the safety of the vehicles requires higher accuracy and update rates. The proposed syst...

Multiple-Vehicle Resource-Constrained Navigation in the Deep Ocean

This thesis discusses sensor management methods for multiple-vehicle fleets of autonomous underwater vehicles, which will allow for more efficient and capable infrastructure in marine science, industry, and naval applications. Navigation for fleets of vehicles in the ocean presents a large challenge, as GPS is not available underwater and dead-reckoning based on inertial or bottom-lock methods ...
